How I Work

Most of my paintings begin with a nightly walk where ever I am .I
usually come back with a idea for the next days painting. Sometimes the composition comes from elements of the walk or I start with elements I want in my painting, then I jiggle them around in my mind and start thinking about color eg. blues here yellows there , greens here etc.

Not all paintings come this way ,sometimes I have a new angle on a old
composition like ‘the horse and buggy’ I may have thought of a new way to paint it that expresses my compassion for color more effective. Then it’s a light sketch onto the canvas hitting the key points of my composition with the ‘ golden means ‘ rule. Then its into the paint with light yellows first then onto the darker colors. This is the opposite of traditional painting where they painted dark to light. “In palette knife painting the first layers are the ones that give the maximum effect of color, like the purples , blues ,yellows are what
make palette knife painting so exciting because the color seems to explode off the canvas so bright and pure” Color and texture are where I am at . The subject matter is just a vehicle for me to apply my color and texture.

An example of ‘How I Work’ is a few nights ago ; I was out on a walk and little did I know but it was a magical night . Just before sunset, half foggy and raining perfect ‘dream elements’.
This made for wonderful blues from the sky and light yellows glowing from the street lights, with deep greens coming from the spring grass,. All I needed for a small serious of paintings all in the same vain.
